The Benefits of Using Water Chillers for Industrial Process Cooling

Process cooling is a common requirement in many industrial settings, necessary for the removal of excessive heat generated by production and manufacturing processes.

There are different types of industrial chillers available to facilitate this, some better suited to certain applications than others. Water chillers are one such type of system.

What is the Purpose of an Industrial Water Chiller?

In industrial environments, the purpose of a water chiller is to provide precision temperature control to ensure safe, productive and efficient working processes. Without going into the technical details, they do this by absorbing, transferring and dissipating unwanted heat by way of a refrigeration cycle.

A water chiller’s exact application will be specific to requirements:

  • It may be used to cool industrial equipment such as lasers or machine tools. These can produce a lot of heat which, if not properly managed, can cause equipment malfunction or breakdown. A water chiller stops equipment from overheating, maximising its lifespan and minimising production downtime.
  • It may be used to cool process fluids like chemicals and oils which can reach dangerously high temperatures, and even cause fires. A water chiller prevents this, protecting workers, equipment and property.
  • It may be used to cool a certain product, like plastics during moulding for example. Excessive heat in this instance can damage the integrity of a product, so removal of that heat is necessary to ensure quality production.

Water chillers can be found in many industrial settings. They are commonly used in the plastics, chemical and printing industries, in the fermentation of alcoholic beverages, and in the production of medicines to name a few.

What are the Advantages of Water Cooled Chillers?

They are Energy Efficient

Water chillers bring increased energy efficiency for a couple of key reasons. First, they operate independently of ambient conditions. This means that, unlike air cooled chillers, they are not subject to system inefficiencies caused when those ambient conditions fluctuate.

Second, as water is an excellent medium for carrying heat energy they are highly effective at rapidly lowering temperatures. This makes them the energy efficient option for large industrial applications.

They Have a Long Lifespan

When installed, most component parts of a water cooled chiller are placed in an enclosed environment. This means that the majority of the system will be protected from damaging natural elements like wind, rain, snow, ice and excessive heat. This in turn leads to less wear and tear.

Combine this with the fact that water chiller manufacturers build these systems to last and you have a durable investment, provided your system is properly maintained of course.

They are Quiet

The noise level associated with most manufacturing and production processes is high enough without adding a noisy cooling system to it. Water cooled chillers have relatively few dynamic components so they do not generate much noise when in operation.

They are Flexible

Industrial water chillers are highly adaptable. They can be configured to suit a wide variety of settings and applications to ensure maximum process compatibility. Whatever your operation requirements, a properly sized and well maintained water cooled chiller can maximise productivity, minimise equipment downtime and provide a safe working environment.
